Plenty more to come from Dee kid Kerr

- BY GEORGE CRAN

KERR Waddell has been a real shining light for Dundee this season after coming out of nowhere but who might be next to force their way into the first team?

Tonight, the Dark Blues’ U/20s get the chance to showcase their skills in senior competition as they take on Alloa in the Irn-Bru Cup.

Dens Park won’t exactly be filled to the brim but those who do turn up might just get a glimpse of what is to come.

This time last season, Dundee’s Colts were knocked out at the first hurdle by Highland League side Cove Rangers at Station Park.

They led thanks to a Greg Warwick opener before Cove fought back to score twice in the last 12 minutes to go through.

Playing at centre-back that day was a little-known 19-year-old defender called Kerr Waddell.

At that point, few would have imagined his sharp rise to the firstteam fold.

Club captain and fellow-centreback Darren O’Dea, however, isn’t too surprised at the impression the young lad from Arbroath has made.

The Irishman said: “Kerr has been brilliant. He’s showed he can play.

“I thought Cowdenbeath was a real polished performance and, all of a sudden, he was thrown in the deep end a little for the derby.

“The gaffer would probably tell you he had complete faith in him.

“You only know when you put them in but his temperament was really good. He has been calm, he’s been excellent and now you’ve got another player on your books who is pushing to play and someone you know you can rely on.

“He’s a lovely lad. I’ve done some coaching with him in the U/20s last year so I knew a lot about him.

“I’d like to think he’s someone I can help because there’s plenty more to come from him.”

Tonight is a real step up for the current crop of U/20s as they meet a League One side.

Not many will be expecting victory
