Spiders get their season up and running

-

IN the Premier League, Downfield were celebrating on Wednesday with their first win of the campaign over Thornton Hibs.

The Spiders took a two-goal lead through strikes from Dale Davidson and Phil Hagan before Shaun Keatings pulled one back for Hibs.

Davidson restored the Spiders two-goal advantage but they were made to sweat when Liam Forbes reduced the deficit. However, Paul Marr’s men held out for the win.

The manager will delay making his final selection for their trip to Fauldhouse.

Tayport were outdone by Kirrie Thistle when two late goals from the Westview Park side earned them the points in midweek.

It looked like heading for a draw but, with five minutes remaining, Lee Cameron put Thistle ahead and, in the final minute, Stewart Russell made sure with a second.

The Fifers will head over the Forth tomorrow and they can expect a tough encounter with Tranent, who were 5-1 winners over Downfield last week.

Kirrie boss Jim Finlayson has the same squad available for the trip to face Haddington Athletic.

Kirrie have placed midfielder Adam O’Connor on the transfer list. Interested parties contact Wilson Cooper on 07871 542738.

As they prepare for their trip to newly-promoted Blackburn United, St Andrews are buoyant after their midweek victory at Glenrothes racked up a third successive win.

Given Saints only managed five wins last season, little wonder boss Craig Morrison is a happy man.

Anesu Tabengwa starts a two-game ban for the Fifers.
