Shaughnessy is ‘solid as a rock’

-

JOE Shaughnessy will again be at the heart of the St Johnstone defence for tomorrow’s home game against Partick Thistle.

The Irishman has been one of Saints’ best performers in recent seasons with manager Tommy Wright stating: “Joe has been a steady feature for us. He has pace and is solid as a rock. We have a good basis at the back with Joe and Steven Anderson.

“They have built up a solid relationship and they both work very hard.”

Saints only injury concern is over midfielder Blair Alston.

“Blair has a wee niggle but should be OK,” Tommy added.

The Perth men sit top of the Premiership but recently lost 3-0 at home to Partick in the Betfred Cup.

Meanwhile, Saints and Rangers shortlived Euro adventures netted them less than £200,000 each, figures released by Uefa have revealed.

The duo fell at the first qualifying round of the Europa League, Rangers to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn and Saints to the little-known Trakai who come from Lithuania.

Newly-released figures show the pair made £195,789 each from their disappointing campaigns on the Continent.

Aberdeen fared only slightly better by reaching the third qualifying round before crashing to Apollon Limassol of Cyprus.

That came after the Dons defeated Siroki Brijeg of Bosnia. They earned a total of £418,899.
