80s iconsGoWest still going strong

LEGENDARY 80s icons Go West are appearing in concert at the Whitehall Theatre on Saturday September 9.

The Brit Award-winning band was formed in 1982 by Peter Cox and Richard Drummie, who went on to have huge commercial success and established themselves as one of the most successful singer/songwriter duos of the decade.

Six albums and 20 million sales later, Go West are stronger than ever. They have enjoyed numerous hit singles worldwide, notably King Of Wishful Thinking, the opening song in the hugely successful film Pretty Woman.

They will be performing all of their greatest hits in Dundee, including We Close Our Eyes, Call Me, Faithful, King of Wishful Thinking and Don’t Look Down.

When they started out, Go West had a publishing deal and owned a portastudio but lacked a band or recording company.

Cox and Drummie decided, with support from their manager John Glover, to find a musical producer, and record just two of their songs.

The tracks We Close Our Eyes and Call Me enabled Go West to land a recording contract with Chrysalis Records.

After confirmation of the Chrysalis deal, they recruited British guitarist Alan Murphy, whose contributions became a key ingredient in shaping the duo’s musical identity.

Go West’s debut single We Close Our Eyes was released in 1985 and reached number five in the UK singles chart, number five in the US Dance Club Play chart and number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The video for the song, directed by Godley and Creme, became an early favourite on MTV.

The song was part of the soundtrack for the Italian horror film Dèmoni.

The track was their highest-placed UK single and only appearance in the UK top 10.

The duo’s eponymous debut album was released in 1985.

It included what would be their first top 40 hit in the US, Don’t Look Down.

This is a great chance to see a classic UK act on stage.
