Bon Scott statue set to be marked by new plaque

-

KIRRIEMUIR’S rock god son will be further immortalised as part of a programme highlighting attractions linked to the town’s Central Area Regeneration Scheme (Cars).

The Bon Scott statue at Bellies Brae is to be one of two locations marked with a bronze plaque after Kirrie Community Council made a successful approach to the Cars steering group for a slice of the five-figure pot remaining from a £1 million-plus fund that has been used to improve the burgh.

Dozens of town centre properties have been spruced up in the programme and, with the scheme scheduled to end next year, the community council asked for £4,000 to further promote the town.

Jenni Brown, of the community council, said the intention is to add plaques marking the police museum in Reform Street and the Bon Scott statue to a list of more than 20 heritage locations already marked, while a leaflet for visitors detailing the heritage trail will also be updated and reprinted.

Town councillor Ronnie Proctor said: “I know people like apps and that sort of thing but I think there is very much still a place for a visitor leaflet to guide folk around the town.”

Projects at the former church centre in Bank Street, the Ogilvy Arms Hotel and Visocchi’s are still to be completed and Cars project officer Karen West said it was “unfortunate that the last three remaining grant projects, all in prominent locations, have proved problematic”.

She added: “Putting this into perspective, however, 50 buildings within the Kirrie conservation area have benefited from Cars assistance.”
