Shipbuilders turn on the style in cup

- BY JUNICUS

RESULTS in the first round of the East of Scotland Cup went pretty much as expected with one notable exception.

East Craigie provided the big upset when they dumped Broughty Athletic out of the competition with a super performance at Whitton Park.

The Fed were extremely disappointing but full marks to the Shipbuilders who outplayed and outfought them for long periods of the tie.

James Malone headed Craigie into the lead after five minutes but the Fed levelled through Greg McNaughton in 20 minutes.

But a determined Craigie took the lead again in 35 minutes through Aiden Benvie.

Then, in the second half, the Shipbuilders built on their lead as they outgunned the Super League side.

Benvie scored his second of the day in 50 minutes and Adam Brown made it a day to remember with a fourth in 55 minutes.

Craigie have placed Darren Gray on the transfer list. Interested clubs should contact Ade Shearer on 07757 550401.

The decision to switch their tie to Thomson Park paid off big time for Lochee United as they swept aside Lochgelly and ran out easy 6-0 winners.

The Bluebells started with a bang and a 25-yard free-kick from Dougie Cameron gave them the lead after four minutes, then a smart finish from Connor Birse made it two in 26 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time, Cameron scored his second of the day when he was upended in the box and took the penalty himself to put the hosts three up.

It was again one-way traffic in the second half and it came as no surprise when, two minutes after the restart, Scott McComiskie increased their lead and a Birse header made it five in 56 minutes.

With five minutes left, Birse then completed a fine day’s work when he sidefooted home to clinch his hat-trick.

A youthful Violet side found it tough going against a slick Bo’ness outfit who strolled to a 7-0 victory at Glenesk.

Likewise, North End put up a spirited show against Bonnyrigg but, in the end, the Super League leaders had a bit too much for them and ran out 3-0 winners.
