It’s time to give kids a breather

-

I’M a big fan of Dundee centre-halves Kerr Waddell and Jack Hendry.

They’re among the brightest young defenders in the country.

I can’t help thinking, though, that come Saturday’s home clash with in-form St Johnstone, one of them will have to make way for club captain Darren O’Dea.

If that’s what happens it will be for their good as well as the team’s.

As a centre-half myself, I know it’s a position where, as well as playing your own game, you have to organise others around you.

That second part comes with experience because, when you’re still little more than a kid, it’s hard to tell older players what they should be doing.

Right now, as a team, Dundee are shipping too many goals and need to be better organised on the park.

Making sure people are where they should be is one of O’Dea’s strengths and that’s why he was made club captain.

And for Waddell or Hendry, the time is probably right for a break.
