Demolition work gets under way

A LANDMARK building has been razed to the ground to make way for a multi-million-pound redevelopm­ent.

The Waverley Hotel in York Place, Perth, has been demolished, with the annex t o t he rear on Caledonian Road next to come down.

The corner site will then be at the centre of businesswo­man Ann Gloag’s £3.6 million plan to build a multi-use hall and gym in its place.

The new facility will be linked t o t he adjacent Trinity Church of t he Nazarene, of which Ms Gloag is a member.

Once one of Perth’s popular hotels for functions and weddings, the Wav e r l ey b e c a m e a homeless hostel in 2011 but closed for good that year.

Since then the building had deteriorat­ed and become an eyesore with the writing on the wall after it was badly damaged by a fire in November 2015.

The new facility will be available for community use and an open space will be created to the front of the building.

The woman — named locally as Aimee Heenan — died within a flat at Hilltown Court on Monday afternoon.

A police presence has been in place at the multi since, with an area initially cordoned off at the entrance to the building.

The cordon was lifted yesterday, after the area had been checked by officers with a sniffer dog and carrying an evidence bag.

A spokeswoma­n for Police Scotland said today that the death was still being treated as unexplaine­d, and that inquiries were continuing.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man who was arrested at the scene has been charged with offences including resisting police, threatenin­g and abusive behaviour, police assault and obstructio­n.

It’s understood he has been released and will appear in court at a later date.

Councillor George McIrvine, who represents the Coldside ward — which includes the Hilltown — urged locals to support police as they continue their probe.

He said: “The loss of a life is always tragic under such circumstan­ces.

“Thoughts and prayers are with the woman’s loved ones.

“I would ask the local community to assist and support Police Scotland with their ongoing investigat­ion.”

Coldside councillor Helen Wright said she was shocked and saddened to learn of the death. She said: “This is very sad news. “I am not aware of the circumstan­ces but my thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s family and
