MY child also attended this course and I do not consider it is designed for children in their age group.

The Monday-Friday course was part of the curriculum and funded through grants, with no cost to any parent. There were children, of different age groups, taking part from other schools too, not just Dundee’s Morgan Academy.

The activity we parents had the biggest concern about was the hike and camping expedition. The camp site, decided by the instructor, was an exposed overgrown grassy area. Setting up camp in long grass has its risks, especially where deer roam freely, as there is a high risk of exposure to ticks. The inevitable happened.

On return to the centre’s site the next day, the group were told to check themselves for ticks and if any were found, they were shown how to remove them.

The group members were worried they may not get them out correctly and become unwell and were embarrasse­d that they were left to check each other. Children of this age should not have to be put in this predicamen­t.

Surely, a centre providing this type of outdoor activities service, should have a fully qualified first aid person, on site, to oversee the individual­s and ensure any ticks found were removed and the area
