Comets star big style in Ayrshire

-

DUNDEE’S Scottish National League play-off champions Comets travelled to Kilmarnock to meet league new boys Kilmarnock Thunder.

The Ayrshire side were an unknown entity to Comets and were treated as a dangerous team capable of an upset.

However, with the strength of the Dundee side, Thunder needed to be at their very best to compete with the league leaders but it was Comets who came out well on top.

It looked like a landslide was on its way when Comets scored after only 17 seconds.

The home side equalised and goals were traded with the end of the first period standing 5-3 to Comets.

The second period saw the Dundee side put Thunder in a stranglehold which saw Comets race to an 11-4 lead.

Period three couldn’t end quickly enough for the home side as Comets put on a masterclass of keeping the puck and forcing Thunder to be hemmed in their own end.

Apart from one loose pass that young Keir Anderson finished neatly for the home side, Comets finished the game 16-5 up.

Almost all the Comets players scored points, including 16-year-old Perth High schoolboy Charlie Scott, who scored a fine slapshot for his first senior goal.

Ross Johnston and Andrew Henderson hit hat-tricks and captain Lewis Gold topped the lot, scoring eight times.

Bill Hogg and Jamie Whitelaw returned to the side after sitting out one-game bans.

Comets have their first derby of the season this Saturday against Dundee Tigers in what is always a good match.

Comets coach Rab Brown said: “We’ll go into Saturday’s game the same as any other. We will be out to secure the points.

“We have a couple of guys nursing injuries and they will be game time decisions.”
