Pur­pose of univer­sity in ques­tion

AN event dis­cussing the role of uni­ver­si­ties and higher ed­u­ca­tion in­sti­tu­tions and whether or not they are nec­es­sary in the mod­ern world is to be held in Dundee.

The Aber­tay and Col­lege Union will host an open pub­lic fo­rum on the pur­pose of uni­ver­si­ties next week.

A num­ber of guest speak­ers will be on hand to l ead the dis­cus­sion, which will be chaired by Aber­tay lec­turer Dr Stu­art Waiton.

P ro fe s s o rs Wa l t e r Humes of Aberdeen U n i v e r s i t y, T h o m a s D o ch e r t y o f Wa r w i ck Univer­sity and Den­nis Hayes of Derby Univer­sity will at­tempt to an­swer ques­tions on whether or not stu­dents are be­ing pan­dered to, if aca­demics are be­ing re­stricted, and the over­ar­ch­ing ques­tion — what is the point of a univer­sity?

The event, which will be held i n Room 2157 at Aber­tay Univer­sity, is open to all mem­bers of t he pub­lic.

Free to at­tend, the dis­cus­sion will start at 2pm on Wed­nes­day.
