Stars shining success over

-

IT was a mixed weekend for Dundee Stars.

They lost 7-4 away to Belfast Giants on Saturday.

However, in Dundee Ice Arena last night, they beat Fife Flyers 7-5.

They went into the final period with a 7-2 advantage but their fans were left with a nailbiting finish as Flyers hit three unanswered goals.

Coach Omar Pacha said: “After a great 40 minutes we made too many mistakes in the final 20 minutes and let them back in.

“We weren’t playing physical enough. We gave them chances which they took.

“Still we got two league points and that’s what we were looking for.”

He went on: “In Belfast we conceded three early goals and you can’t do that against Giants.

“We played better in the second period but we need to start better. To concede 12 goals over a weekend is not acceptable and that’s something we need to work on.”

Last night, Stars welcomed back Malcolm Gould after his one-match ban and Travis Fullerton returned to the nets having recovered from illness.

It was a blistering start for Dundee when they opened the scoring after four minutes with a powerplay goal from Gould while Fife’s Ian Young sat out two minutes for slashing.

Russ Moyer found himself in penalty trouble when he was sent to the box for interference and Stars took advantage of the extra man with a goal from Chris Lawrence.

Ten seconds later, Jimmy Jensen made it 3-0.

The visitors’ Charlie Mosey received two minutes for tripping and Dundee made the powerplay count when Jensen added his second to make it 4-0.

Flyers took a time-out to recover and, when Stars’ Jordan Cownie took two minutes for holding on 12 minutes, it was Fife’s turn to cash in on the extra man when Liam Heelis netted to bring the game back to 4-1.

Riley Stadel then restored the home side’s four-goal advantage.

Fife pulled it back to 5-2 when Peter Leblanc scored.

Stars responded and Jensen completed his hat-trick when Dundee went through on a three on one for 6-2.

With 33 seconds remaining in the second period, Johan Andersson fired a shot that Iles in the Fife goal got a glove to but couldn’t prevent from hitting the net to give Dundee a 7-2 lead.

Flyers pulled a goal back when LeBlanc added his second of the night.
