Staff member sacked

Council confirms workers are no longer employed

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

A MEMBER of staff allegedly involved in the theft of £5,000 from a sheltered housing complex has been sacked.

A man and a woman had previously been suspended during an internal investigation into the disappearance of thousands of pounds from Craigie Very Sheltered Housing, in Craigie Street, Stobswell, which is run by Dundee City Council.

A police investigation has been launched into the alleged theft.

It was initially thought about £2,000 was reported to have gone missing.

However, the Tele has learned the figure was closer to £5,000 and was allegedly taken from the complex’s comfort fund, which benefits elderly residents.

A city council spokesman said today: “These two individuals are no longer employed by the council.”

It is understood that one of the pair was sacked, while the other resigned.

The Tele revealed last month that an internal probe was launched over alleged “financial irregularities” at the sheltered housing complex.

The matter was not initially reported to police while bosses carried out their own probe.

But a source said that officers were eventually contacted after concerns the matter was being kept quiet.

The source added: “There was grave concern that this alleged criminal act had been carried out and had not been reported to the police.”

As a result, the matter was reported to the police by the city council.

A criminal investigation was subsequently launched.

The source added: “The council was told that if the disappearance of the money was not reported by it, then someone else would be reporting the matter.

“As a result, the police were informed of the matter.”

Police have confirmed an investigation is being carried out into the theft, with a spokesman for the force adding: “We are aware of the complaint and inquiries are ongoing.”
