ROUND-UP Busy weekend sees plenty of goals scored

HOCKEY’S National League programme had some games on Friday night and was fully under way on Saturday.

It was followed by cup firstround games on Sunday.

It was a busy weekend, so it’s a pity the weekend coming has virtually no men’s league games, though the ladies are in action

On Friday i n the men’s National Division One, scores were Uddingston 0 Western Wildcats 1 and Inverleith 5 Edinburgh University 8.

The other Friday game, Clydesdale v Kelburne was moved to Saturday and Kelburne had a 6-3 win to retain top place but only on goal difference over Grange. They had a 2-1 win over GroveMenzi­eshill with Albert Rowling scoring for ’Hill.

Also on Saturday, MJV Dundee Wanderers hit Hillhead for four without reply and without dominating play.

Jack Fullerton opened the scoring after nine minutes and it stayed unchanged until half-time.

Shortly after the restart, Bobby Ralph hit a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle for the second goal.

A solo run and goal by Fergus Sandison and a second Fullerton goal clinched the match at 4-0.

In Division Two on Saturday, Perthshire lost 6-1 to Gordonians and Harris FP lost 8-2 against St Andrews University.

In Division Three, at Dalnacraig, Monarchs had a 3-2 win over Erskine Stewart’sMelville with Callum Boag netting to equalise. He then put Monarchs ahead and Ross Havens netted the winner.

In the Men’s Regional Division One, Grove Menzieshil­l II had a 5-1 win over Uddingston II with goals from Dave Petrie (2), Nathen Souter, Andrew Suttie and Keir Robb.

In Regional Two, Dundee Wanderers II l ost 3-2 to Hillhead II with Wanderers scorers being Blair Williams and Paul Dailly.

In t he Ladies National League Division One, there was also Friday evening action.

Scores — Glasgow High Kelvinside 0 Western Wildcats 1, Watsonians 2 Edinburgh University 5, Clydesdale Western 5 Kelburne 0.

On Saturday, Grange hosted Grove-Menzieshil­l and lost 4-1. MJV Dundee Wanderers ladies had a 5-0 win over Hillhead with goals from Amanda Maxwell, Charlotte Watson (2) and Amy Snell (2).

In the Midlands ladies and men’s leagues at the weekend, there were full fixture lists with Perthshire II and Monarchs III both having a rest day. Men’s scores — Division One — Wanderers III 5 Dundee University I, goals by Bruce Robertson (2) and Graham Reid (3), Monarchs II 0 Menzieshil­l III 5, Harris II 3 Madras 2, St Andrews University 9 Perthshire III 1, Menzieshil­l IV 8 Wanderers IV 3.

Division Two scores — Perthshire IV 3 Madras II 0, Harris III 3 Perthshire V 1.

Ladies Division One — St Andrews University III 0 Madras 1, Wanderers II 4 Kinross 0, Perthshire II 2 Blairgowri­e 3. Division Two — Perthshire III 0 Grove III 11, Madras II 0 Stirling University 1.

In the five national cup events on Sunday, 61 games were scheduled. Another 19 teams had first-round byes to round two on October 22.

In the men’s Scottish Cup, Perthshire lost out to Glasgow University in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw with Perthshire having equalised from a penalty corner.

Grove-Menzieshil­l had a 10-0 win over Watsonians, a Paul Martin hat-trick being the best of the seven scorers. Highland won 4-0 over Harris FP and Gordonians lost 2-1 to Dundee Wanderers.
