Roadworks under way

Section of key route closed to allow work to take place

ROADWORKS are taking place in Dundee this week as part of the railway station redevelopment.

A section of South Marketgait will remain closed until Friday in order for the work to be carried out.

Two new high-voltage cables will be installed under the footpath, resulting in a lane closure to allow a safe walkway for pedestrians.

A spokeswoman for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, which is carrying out the work, said: “Our first priority is to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity for our customers and we are therefore closing one of the lanes on South Marketgait to allow a safe public walkway while we carry out excavation works within the footpath.

“This will result in a short lane closure of approximately 50 metres from the bend on the A991 to meet South Marketgait heading towards Greenmarket.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The new cabling will connect to the railway station and the adjoining Sleeperz hotel, which are being built as part of the £1 billion Waterfront development.

The train station and hotel are due to open in March.

Part of Dura Street will be closed next month to allow phone and broadband cabling to be i nstalled by Openreach.

The road will close between Eliza Street and Forfar Road for 10 days, from Monday October 9.

An Openreach spokesman said: “Engineers plan to build approximately 90 metres of underground chambers, mainly under the pavement, in Dura Street. The new chambers will hold cables providing phone and broadband services.

“The work is undertaken in accordance with statutory requirements and any traffic management required to allow safe working will be carried out with the agreement of Dundee City Council. We are sorry for any disruption while these works take place, but we would not be undertaking work unless it was essential.”
