‘Stabbing’ close to city supermarket
POLICE are investigating after a teenager was reportedly stabbed near to a Dundee supermarket.
Officers raced to the car park at Sainsbury’s near Claypotts at 9.50pm yesterday following reports of an disturbance close to the store.
Eyewitnesses said that a young male was stabbed during the altercation, which was believed to have involved up to 20 people.
One witness, who asked not be named, said that she had seen the immediate aftermath of the incident.
She said: “There was a big gang of boys hanging around the car park when I was going into the shops.
“There must have been 20 of them at least — I’ve never really seen that size of group hanging about here.
“When I got into the shop there was a boy sitting on one of the chairs and he was surrounded by Sainsbury’s staff. The staff were running around and making sure he was OK. “I didn’t realise it was a stabbing at first but then he took his top off and he had a stab wound on his chest. The staff phoned the police.”
The woman added that while she didn’t think the wound was serious, the victim looked young.
“He looked like he was 15 — he was breathing heavily and a bit flustered but I don’t think the wound was life-threatening,” she said. “He was only wearing shorts and t-shirt and was speaking to the woman standing in front of me, and I heard him say that he had been stabbed. It was a massive shock because I’ve never really seen anything like that around here before.
“The police came later — a load of them kept going past with their lights on.
“There were at least five car fulls of police officers.”
One post on social media made reference to a “squad” of police cars outside the store at around 10.30pm.
The Tele contacted Sainsbury’s for comment but the company had not responded at the time of going to press.
A Police Scotland spokesman told the Tele: “We received a call at 9.50pm yesterday regarding an assault in Tom Johnstone Road.
“A minor injury was sustained during the incident, which is still under inquiry.”
However, the force was unable to provide further information on whether anyone had been detained in relation to the incident at the time of going to press.
