McInnes backs Stewart to fire

-

ABERDEEN boss Derek McInnes has backed on-loan striker Greg Stewart to fire after an indifferent start to his Dons career.

Former Dundee frontman Stewart joined the club on loan from Birmingham in the summer but has yet to hit the back of the net in seven appearances f or McInnes’ side.

The 27-year-old has failed to hold down a regular starting position, and has admitted he has not had the immediate impact he would have liked since joining the club.

However McInnes suggested Stewart needs games under his belt before the Pittodrie faithful see the best of him but is comfortable with what he has seen so far.

“Greg is being a bit hard on himself,” he said. “There have been times where he’s come off the bench and helped take the game our way.

“Some games when he’s started he’s had an impact on the game. But like a few others, he’s still waiting for that performance that he’s really happy with, which may be the performance to keep him in the side on a more regular basis.

“There’s an adjustment for Greg. He’s played more or l ess a full year with hardly any game time and he’s come up here really eager to impress.

“There can be some times when you try too hard.

“I think he has to relax a wee bit and be a wee bit more himself and take more opportunities but he i s honest enough and he’s a player I’ve been looking forward to working with for a long time and I’ m delighted we’ve got him.”
