Stars strike after losing

It was a mixed weekend for Dundee Stars who took two points from a possible four from both their games.

On Saturday, they l ost 5-1 i n Kirkcaldy to Fife Flyers, a scoreline that didn’t reflect the effort put in by Dundee who outshot their hosts.

They returned to Tayside last night to record a 5-1 win over Milton Keynes Lightning to give them their first points in this season’s league campaign.

Stars had an early powerplay chance when Lighning’s Carl Hudson was given two minutes for charging but the home side failed to take advantage.

Milton Keynes had a powerplay when Johan Andersson sat out two minutes for slashing but also failed to make the extra skater count.

Stars took the lead on 11 minutes with a strike from Joey de Concilys.

Then Stars took a penalty when Emerson Hrynyk was given two minutes for tripping and Lightning equalised on the powerplay through Kevin King.

Tyler Brickler then struck to make it 2-1 to the home side.

The second stanza was fairly even with defences on top.

Stars’ Jimmy Jensen took a twominute penalty f or tripping but Lightning failed to convert.

Guillaume Doucet sat out a two minute minor for slashing and Brickler netted his second on the powerplay to give Dundee a 3-1 advantage.

The Taysiders added a fourth on 36 minutes through de Concilys.

Dundee’s Andersson was then sent to the penalty box for tripping. That left Milton Keynes with a powerplay at the beginning of the final period.

Stars killed the penalty at the start of the final third and led 4-1 with 18 minutes left.

On 48 minutes, Dundee’s Patrick Lee took two minutes for slashing but the visitors’ once again failed to cash in on the extra man.

With eight minutes remaining, Stars found themselves on a five on three when the visitors’ Matt Nickerson and Kyle Essery were sent to penalty box on two minute minors. However, the Lightning defence stoutly held firm to kill both penalties.

Milton Keynes’ Francis VerreaultP­aul was awarded a five-minute penalty for fighting and a two-minute penalty for roughing. On the powerplay, Jensen added a fifth for the home side.

That completed the scoring and Stars held out for a 5-1 win.
