Councillor condemns privatisation plans

-

A DUNDEE councillor today condemned proposals to privatise the city’s central post office.

Under the proposed move, the Post Office would move from its current premises at Meadowside to Whitehall Street, and shift from being centrally managed to being run by QDSA Limited, a private firm based in Cupar.

Richard McCready said he and the Labour group were concerned the effect the proposals would have on the future of post office services in Dundee.

Mr McCready said: “The Labour group and I are concerned that the city centre Post Office in Dundee will be operated by a private company.

“I am clear that the status of a Crown Post Office offers the full range of services provided by the Post Office.

“Dundee should have a Crown Post Office.

“The service we are being offered is a privatised service that relies on the commercial success of the operator in order to maintain post office services in our city centre.

“Many people would see the Post Office as a public service, which should be available in the city centre.”

He added: “Dundee is Scotland’s fourth-biggest city and it is a growing city.

“It is very much a student city, with two thriving universities, the University of Abertay Dundee and the University of Dundee, as well as Dundee and Angus College.

“We are disappointed that the proposals mean that Dundee will not have a Crown Post Office.

“We are clear that we see the Crown Post Office as the best service offered by the Post Office and we believe that Dundee should continue to have a Crown Post Office.”
