New homes approved

Plans by developer ‘a sign area is on the up’

A COMMUNITY leader has welcomed plans to build more than 40 new homes in Whitfield.

The city council has approved plans by InverTay Homes to build 43 properties on an area of empty land in Summerfield Terrace.

The development will extend along the street as far as Summerfield Avenue, and will feature eight twobedroom, 30 three-bedroom and five four-bedroom homes.

It’s the latest phase of the ongoing regeneration of the area, which began in 2006 and could see up to 1,000 new houses built.

George Roberts, 78, who is chairman of the Whitfield Development Group, welcomed the council’s decision.

A retired engineering inspector, George, who has lived in Whitfield for 48 years and is Dundee Citizen of the Year, said: “This is definitely a positive as there’s always demand for housing.

“The more houses that come into the scheme the better — whether that’s affordable or private development.

“It’s another clear sign the whole area is on the up and any progress is beneficial.

“Also, if more houses are built then that in turn helps increase footfall to the local shops, so it’s a win-win situation.”

Fraser Middleton of ARKTX, the architects for the project, said it was an “exciting development” for the area.

He said: “This is the second phase of property development by InverTay in Whitfield.

“The first phase comprised of 32 properties and this new phase is based on the success of that.

“Affordable housing will also be provided. This is an exciting development of very spacious and diverse family homes.”

Regeneration work already completed in Whitfield includes Ballumbie Primary School, which opened in 2011, and community centre The Crescent which was completed in 2014.
