Family celebration as Jim reaches 90 — even if he can’t believe it himself!

-

HE finds it hard to believe but Dundee man Jim Stephen has just celebrated his 90th birthday.

“Me aged 90? I honestly don’t believe it myself sometimes,” he said.

Born and brought up at Rosemill near Tealing, Jim’s first job was as a butcher with the Dundee Co-Op Society in the 1940s — but he had several jobs over the years.

He spent seven years at the NCR and also worked at Delta Capillary and as a bus driver/conductor for the Corporation.

And if any of you remember the Chrome Rail in Seagate in the mid-1960s, Jim might well have served you there too!

Jim was also a keen bowler back in the day.

But the biggest thing in his life has always been his beloved wife Georgie.

He first met a young Georgina McPherson in the Palais in South Tay Street.

The couple were married in 1951 when she was only 19.

“And he’s still the only man for me,” said

Georgie, who was a checkout operator at William Low’s supermarket for many years.

The couple, who have lived in the Glens since the 1980s, celebrated Jim’s 90th with the rest of the family — their son, also James, his wife Carrol and their lovely granddaughters, Lauren and Hayley.

So what’s the secret of a long and happy life?

“I really don’t know,” said Jim.

“I like the odd OVD rum with green ginger from time to time and I still like to see how Dundee FC’s getting on.

“How I got to 90 I honestly don’t know!”
