Eatery plan approved
Applicant hopes to attract ‘high-quality’ restaurant
THE team behind plans for a new restaurant in Dundee hopes to attract a high-end eatery after several big name chains opened in the city.
Proposals to convert the former Early Learning Centre in Commercial Street into a restaurant have been approved by councillors.
Local architect Jon Frullani submitted the application to change the store into an eatery and hot food takeaway on behalf of Birmingham-based A’ila Moraraba Ltd.
He told the Tele the firm had identified Dundee as a city on the up.
“My client has said he is delighted to get planning permission,” he said.
“He thinks Dundee is continuing to move up and he’s delighted to be part of the regeneration of Commercial Street.
“He doesn’t have a tenant lined up yet but he is looking to introduce a high-quality idea.
“He has noticed Dundee has brought in brands like Five Guys and Frankie and Benny’s and would be keen to get somebody similar on board.”
City centre councillor Lynne Short said: “It’s great news. I’m very keen to explore as much as possible all the opportunities for a night-time economy.
“Commercial Street is becoming more and more desirable. It’s having a revamp.
“It’s a lovely street and this will just add to the variety that is on offer.
“The environment is changing to be more family-friendly.”
Dundee City Council said that while the development had been approved, a number of conditions were attached to it going ahead.
A’ila Moraraba Ltd will have to seek further approval on the ventilation system it intends to install in the kitchen on the premises.
The council said: “Prior to the commencement of work on site, details of the proposed extraction and ventilation system with a high level discharge shall be submitted to the council for written approval.”
