New High St clock designs tick along

- By CIARAN SHANKS

THESE are the final designs for a new clock in Lochee High Street.

Residents and community groups in the area are deliberating over the proposals that will see a clock return to the heart of Lochee.

A timepiece once stood at the bottom of the street, but was removed about eight years ago.

Its whereabouts became unknown, but a freedom of information request submitted by the Tele uncovered the clock had been damaged.

Dundee City Council, however, vowed to install a new clock in High Street with input from the Lochee Community Regeneration Forum.

Now, the three final designs have been revealed.

Jayne Kelly, from community action group Save Our High Street, said she was delighted with the proposals.

She said: “The regeneration forum did great work in campaigning to get this up and running. We’ve supported them and kept pushing for it and now we’re getting it. There was a previous design nobody was in favour of. The original design did not reflect Lochee at all.

“But they went back to the drawing board and came back with these three designs, which are all great. We did a survey and some people wanted a more modern look, some people were interested in something more traditional and a few people wanted something a wee bit different.”

Lochee residents will be able to express their views on the designs, and once a final drawing is selected, work on the clock should commence early next year.

Jayne added: “We’ve had our say and now it’ll go back to the regeneration forum.

“We’ve been told that it should be in the next few days that people will get to have their say on it, whether that’s in the library or the community centre.

“If people want something bonnie in their area then they should come out and get involved.

“Once we get all the results back it will go the council and we’ll get the final design. I think the work will start next year. It’s real progress and it’s another great success for our group.”

Dundee City Council was asked to comment but had not responded at the time of going to press. Ourvoice PAGE 16
