Toffees starting to search

-

EVERTON are searching for a new manager to lift them out of the Premier League relegation zone after sacking Ronald Koeman.

The Dutchman’s reign on Merseyside was ended after Sunday’s 5-2 loss to Arsenal left the Toffees in the division’s bottom three despite a summer of significant investment.

Ko e m a n a r r i v e d a t Everton’s training base yesterday morning but, within a matter of hours, the club had released a statement announcing his departure.

It read: “Chairman Bill Kenwright, the board of directors and major shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months and for guiding the club to seventh place i n last season’s Premier League campaign.”

Everton are back i n action against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup tomorrow and, though there was no confirmation in t he statement, it i s expected t o be David Unsworth who will temporarily lead the team, as he did when Roberto Martinez was axed in 2016.

Having guided the Toffees’ U/23s t o t he Premier League 2 title last season, Unsworth could be considered a candidate for the senior gig on a fulltime basis, too, given the plethora of exciting youngsters at Goodison Park.

Burnley’s Sean Dyche is the bookmakers’ favourite, while Watford’s Marco Silva and the out-of-work David Moyes, who spent 11 larg ely successful years with Everton, also have short odds to take on the position.
