Youngster gets praise from Joe

-

ST JOHNSTONE defender Joe Shaughnessy was full of praise for Liam Gordon after t h e yo u n g s t e r ’s display in the away 1-0 loss against Hearts.

Gordon came in to partner Shaughnessy at centre-back after Steven Anderson was sent off against Rangers and Joe said:“I thought Liam played very well.

“He did not look out of place and he was good to play alongside.”

Gordon sustained head and shoulder injuries during the Hearts match and is a doubt for tonight’s home fixture against Ross County.

However, Saints will give him every chance of proving his fitness.

Should he fail to make it, Anderson is likely to step back in.

R i c h a rd F o s t e r, like Anderson, is free of suspension, and Murray Davidson is over the hamstring knock which meant he missed the encounter against Hearts.

Joe felt Saints “defended well” against Hearts.

That was indicated by the fact they lost only one goal compared to the three each that entered their net in their two previous matches against Aberdeen and Rangers.

“It was disappointing to lose at Murrayfield,” Joe went on. “I felt it was a fairly-even game and we put a lot into it.

“We looked more solid defensively and their goal came when Kyle Lafferty’s shot took a big deflection off me.”

S a i n t s b o s s To m my Wright commented: “I thought Liam Gordon and Joe Shaughnessy were outstanding against Hearts and, hopefully, we will continue to be more solid at the back.

“We need to stop a run of three league defeats tonight and the players must all step up and do better.”
