Experts highlight importance of checking breasts

-

NHS Tayside is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the annual national campaign which encourages as many people as possible to become involved in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research

During the month, more than 4,000 women in the UK will be told they have breast cancer — and nearly 1,000 more will die from the disease.

If every woman regularly checked her breasts, 1,500 lives a year could be saved, but at the moment, less than half of all women in the UK don’t check regularly.

Specialist registrar in breast surgery Dr Beatrix Elsberger said: “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a good opportunity to remind people how important it is to be breast aware, not just in October but every month.

“We would always advise people to carry out regular self-examination, ideally once a month.

“Many women are worried that they would not be able to detect anything but if done regularly they will likely notice a new lump or even a change within the breast. If you do find a lump or notice any changes, you should see your GP immediately.”

The important role that research can play in improving treatment for breast cancer is also highlighted during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr Elsberger added: “Tayside is very fortunate to have first class facilities and staff available for carrying out research clinical trials.

“The Stefani Unit at Ninewells Hospital has dedicated research nurses in cancer treatments and there are currently a number of trials relating to breast cancer surgery taking place in Tayside.

“Research is vitally important and helps us to improve treatments for patients in the future.”
