Company asked to rethink plan for Fisherman’s

THE owners of the Fisherman’s Tavern, i n Broughty Ferry, have been asked to call time on a planned remodel despite it being approved by councillors.

Property owners Belhaven Greene King declined to offer assurances the proposals will not interfere with the pub’s culture and history.

Under the plans, the snug bar at the rear of the premises would be removed to allow space for a new toilet, while a new bar and gantry in the pub would also be installed.

A spokeswoman said they are unable to confirm whether original fixtures and fittings will be retained or if locals will be consulted.

Councillor Lynne Short, a former employee, said stripping out the bar would be a real loss for locals.

She said: “It will take away some character that we’ll never ever get back — perhaps now is the time for the Ferry to say no.

“Just because they have been given planning permission doesn’t mean they have to actually go ahead.

“Do they realise the history behind the pub and what they have on their hands here?

“There will be masses of visitors coming here next year for the Open Golf Championship and the Fish could offer something really different.”

Belhaven bought the bar in 2007 and pledged at the time to retain its old-time aesthetic.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: “We have a number of heritage pubs in our portfolio and we are committed t o successfully implementing updates that improve guest experience while at the same time remaining respectful to the original features of a building.

“This is the case with the Fisherman’s Tavern.”
