Fireworks displays go with a bang

-

WELL done to Dundee City Council for a brilliant fireworks display in Baxter Park. What a show!

Can I ask though, why was the main gate to Baxter Park, going on to Arbroath Road, closed? This meant thousands of people, including a lot of children and parents with prams, were forced to funnel slowly — very slowly — out of the park after the display through the two side gates.

The traffic on the Arbroath Road was at a complete standstill anyway, so if it was to try to cut down the number of people crossing the road, that was a pointless exercise.

I’m sure those caught up in the crush would agree with me.

DO people who go to the public firework displays in Dundee only attend to hear a series of loud bangs? That is not a display. It is a disturbance.

The colours of a good fireworks display are a joy to watch, and enthrall children and young people with their friends and families.

But, Dundee City Council, be aware of the cruelty to the wee creatures on the planet who get frightened and their ears abused by multiple loud bangs from the truly selfish adults who come to the West End to cause a disturbance.

Bangers should be banned from these displays — and anyone wishing to have them — should pay for them themselves and make sure they are far away from cats and dogs and those of us who like a Sunday night not to sound like the battlefields of the Second World War. Powers that be, take note. If my pet needs a vet, I hope you’re paying. Lochee Park is nearly a mile away but it sounded like the display was in my kitchen.

HOWEVER much they spend on the two main bonfire night fireworks displays in Dundee, it’s worth every penny.

My family, and thousands more, enjoyed another spectacular display at Baxter Park.

I wondered though, would anyone else be interested in forming a public subscription to raise a little more money each year to pay Radio Tay not to come? Every year the soundtrack gets worse. The music they constantly play says nothing to me about fireworks. It’s actually so annoying that I’m afraid I’ll not be going back.

THE Lochee Park fireworks display was, once again, spectacular. I particularly enjoyed the music — Olly Murs, Little Mix and others — great singalong tunes. Having a wee dance also helped to keep me warm!

Happy dancer, Birkhill.
