Berra: Csaba can lead Utd back to top

- BY CALUM WOODGER

SCOTLAND and Hearts defender Christophe Berra has backed Dundee United boss Csaba Laszlo to bring success to Tannadice.

And the 32-year-old centre-back speaks from experience.

Berra enjoyed half a season under the Hungarian’s stewardship at Tynecastle in 2008/09 as the Gorgie side finished third in the thenScottish Premier League.

Before his £2 million move to Wolves in January 2009, the Scottish international saw enough to be impressed by how the Terrors’ new manager operates.

“He was my last manager when I left Hearts,” Berra said. “I had a really good experience with him.

“I enjoyed working under him and we were quite successful at the time.

“I learned a lot from him, he’s got different methods, different tactics.

“He’s managed European football, so I’m sure he’ll bring a lot to Dundee United.

“He’s taken them over at a good position joint-top of the Championship so, hopefully, he can get them promoted.

“As a manager, he wants to be solid, tactically he has nous.

“His main job is to win games and I’m sure he’ll do that.”

Meanwhile, Berra also reflected on Scotland’s 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands at Pittodrie last Thursday.

Asked whether the Dutch are the power they once were, he said: “I don’t think they’re that great.

“I think we actually created more chances than them — they scored a goal from a loose pass which was intercepted.

“We had the ball at that point and it took the sting out of the game.

“Kieran (Tierney) and I tried to deal with it by showing them wide but they have that little bit of class where maybe instead of shooting they cut it across goal for two guys at the back stick.

On a night where Callum McGregor, Ryan Jack, Ryan Christie and Jason Cummings were handed debuts, Berra believes the experience will have helped them.
