OAP’s home raided

Pensioner ‘left shaken’ after daytime break-in

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

AN OAP has been left “shaken” after intruders used pillow cases to steal thousands of pounds worth of items from her home.

The pensioner’s property on Forthill Drive in Barnhill was raided, with crooks stealing the gran’s engagement and wedding rings, which were engraved with her late husband’s name.

The 74-year-old’s granddaughter, said thieves used a brick to smash a ground floor window, before climbing into the house.

Items, including Swarovski jewellery, an iPad and a leather Pandora bracelet, were taken in the daytime raid.

The granddaughter said: “My gran has lived in the area for more than two years but she won’t be going back.

“The police were unable to tell us if it was more than one person involved. All the windows in the property were locked. They’ve put a brick through the window and deactivated the alarm.

“It’s a sheltered housing complex and my gran is based on the bottom floor. They were able to climb through the window.”

She said her gran had been out of the property between noon-6pm on Tuesday.

She added: “My gran has been pretty shaken by it. She had sentimental items taken, including wedding and engagement rings from my grandad.

“My grandad is sadly no longer with us — the wedding ring is engraved with the name of my gran and grandad.

“She was unable to wear them since she broke her arm recently. They had also ripped up charity envelopes to see if they had any cash in them.

“The police were here within minutes of the incident being reported and forensics were here until about 9pm on Tuesday.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “A rear window was smashed to gain entry, and jewellery, watches and electronic items were taken, valued at more than £3,000.

“If you have any information which could assist us, please call 101 or speak with any police officer.”
