Final preparations are being made for the light nights celebration.

The festive event is taking place at City Square and will kick off a whole host of weekend festive activities, culminating in the city’s first ever Santa Dash on Sunday.

Xplore Dundee is prepping for the busy night and has reminded people that the bus is the easiest way to travel.

Managing director Elsie Turbyne said: “This is one of the busiest nights in Dundee’s calendar and we’re fully prepared for it, with extra buses and staff lined up to make sure everyone gets there in time for the big moment when the lights are switched on and home safely again later.

“And because there are events happening all weekend, we have discounted tickets to get you to all of the city centre action, plus free travel for Santas taking part in the Santa Dash.

“I would encourage people to avoid the queues for the car parks and take the bus to really enjoy this year’s Light Nights Christmas celebrations.”

Councillor Lynne Short, Dundee City Council city development convener, said: “Christmas Light Night in Dundee is one of the city’s premier events, attracting thousands of people into the heart of our centre to share a very public time of enjoyment and entertainment.

“The size and scale of the occasion means there has to be major road closures and diversions tomorrow and we are keen to give out information so people can plan ahead.

“There is free parking after 3pm at certain car parks and I’d also encourage people to travel by bus for this huge occasion.”

Earl Grey Place East, Earl Grey Place West, South Crichton Street and South Castle Street will be closed to all traffic tomorrow and Saturday.

Castle Street, Exchange Street and Shore Terrace will be closed tomorrow, along with Cowgate/ Panmure Street, Murraygate, Reform Street and High Street.

Parts of Meadowside and Chapel Street will also be closed tomorrow between 6pm-7pm and Dock Street will be closed in part from 4pm-10pm.

There will be diversions on Thomson Avenue from South Union Street to South Commercial Street with traffic instead using South Marketgait, West Marketgait, North Marketgait and East Marketgait. The diversions will be in place from 4pm-10.30pm.
