Soup kitchen reopens

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

The soup kitchen — which is run by the Eagles Wings Trust in Bell Street — hasn’t been operating for the past couple of months as the charity prepared for the opening of its new premises following a relocation.

Although the soup kitchen is back in action, trust manager Mike Cordiner said its new headquarters in the city’s Douglas Street will not now open until January 8 as a result of some lastminute hitches.

Once in the new facility, the charity will continue to offer all the services it currently provides.

It will also welcome the North Law Centre — a free legal advice service — and the Dundee City Council Connect team.

The service was set up to address issues people have with welfare reforms.

“The soup kitchen will be open Monday to Thursday nights back in Bell Street, where we were based previously.”

Mike said the new facility will provide a drop-in centre for homeless people from midday to 2pm, serving hot drinks and lunch.

Mike said that the trust hopes to be able to develop the service it offers when it finally gets up and running from the new building.

He said: “We are considering what we could do differently in the future to help vulnerable people in the city.

“We will use this move to look at how we plan to go forward.”

Mike and a friend founded the Christian-based charity in 2000 and it has grown ever since. The charity has operated from Elim Pentecostal Church in Dudhope Terrace Road for five years.

But with the church now moving back into those premises, it has had to move on.

THERE was a welcome sight in Dundee last night with the re-opening of one of the city’s main late-night soup kitchens.
