Spiders must curb the Wishaw attack

- BY JUNICUS

It’s fingers crossed the weather is a bit kinder this weekend and allows action to resume after last week’s local wipe out.

With the Scottish Cup taking precedence, third-round ties again dominate the fixture card with five Tayside clubs hoping they can get their matches played.

Downfield could have their hands full against Wishaw, who beat Arniston in the last round.

The Central District First Division side currently lie third in their league on 18 points from eight matches but have games in hand on the two sides above them.

By all accounts they are a side who put the emphasis on attack and this is borne out by their league statistics. They have scored 27 goals which makes them the top scorers in the league but, over the same period, they have conceded 14 which suggests their defence isn’t too secure.

The Spiders will be hoping they can take advantage of their weakness at the back.

On the team front, Paul Marr will again be without James Thomson and Jack Neave, who are both suspended.

Lochee United face Johnstone Burgh at Thomson Park and, after losing out to Forfar WE in the last league outing before last week’s postponement, the Bluebells will be aiming to make life hot for the Central District Second Division side.

They will again be without keeper Mark Stewart and Kevin Buchan.

Carnoustie will go into their tie against Petershill minus a number of key players.

Ryan Roche, Jamie Robbie and Steven Cook are on the injured list, while Ewan Buggins is unavailable.

After postponements last week, Forfar West End and Scone Thistle will be hoping their third round home ties go ahead.

West End welcome Shotts Bon Accord and have high hopes the match will be on. They have a squad of 17 available.

Thistle face Kilsyth Rangers, who will provide stern opposition as they sit mid-table in the West Region’s second tier.

But Scone, who have a full squad available, are more than capable of causing an upset.
