Crews tackle blaze at derelict building

- BY STEVEN RAE

DUNDEE firefighters battled a blaze at a derelict building for more than two-and-a-half hours.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) in Blackness Road were called out to Forebank House in Eadies Road, in the Hilltown, at around 5.10pm yesterday. No one was hurt.

The SFRS said it is unknown at this time if the blaze is suspicious.

The building has previously been blighted by fireraisers and youths unlawfully accessing it.

A spokesman for the SFRS said that firefighters would revisit the site today to investigate whether the fire was intentional.

The staff will also use the daylight to check for any “hotspots” — remnants of the blaze which were not fully extinguished at the time.

A spokesman for SFRS said: “We received a call at around 5.12pm to say there was a fire at Forebank House in Eadies Road.

“Firefighters initially had some difficulty in accessing the incident as the locus of the fire is a derelict building.

“Two appliances and a height appliance attended from the Blackness Road fire station in Dundee.

“There were no casualties. Firefighters used a nine-metre ladder and one hose reel jet.

“We received the stop message at 7.49pm.

“Firefighters will be going back today to properly inspect the premises, including checking for any hotspots.”

The spokesman added that Police Scotland had been made aware of the fire.

He said at this stage, it was not known if the blaze was deliberate.

The incident is the second time in nine months that firefighters have been called out to the property.

In April, crews spent more than five hours tackling a fire at the 19th Century house, which lies just off Victoria Road.

The two-storey, three-bay property has lain derelict for years and is on the Buildings At Risk register.

Following April’s fire, locals said the house had attracted youths and associated antisocial behaviour.
