Tommy praises young defender

-

THE road accident which held up St Johnstone quartet Richard Foster, Michael O’Halloran, Chris Millar and Denny Johnstone, causing them to miss Saints’ home match against Kilmarnock, meant an unexpected first team call for 21-year-old central defender Liam Gordon.

And the Perth youngster acquitted himself well, winning the Man-of-theMatch award and gaining praise from manager Tommy Wright.

“Liam did well,” said the Saints team boss.

“He has things to learn but I feel he has a big future.

“He started the game and Callum Hendry came on as a substitute. I was pleased with him, too.”

Steven MacLean netted Saints’ goal in the 2-1 defeat but he won’t face Hamilton away this Saturday as, on medical advice, he doesn’t play on artificial surfaces.

“It was a great finish from Macca against Kilmarnock which ended a good move but he won’t play at H a m i l t o n ,” To m my confirmed.

Aaron Comrie and Brian Easton are still out injured.

Comrie is out until January and it could also be t hen before Easton returns.

Referring to the fact that four players missed the Killie game due to being held up by an accident, Tommy said he won’t be taking any action against them.

“We’ve had a bit of bad luck this season,” he went on. “Four miss out due to an accident and there have been two occasions when we have had to substitute players i n the first half because they have gone off injured.

“It’s a tight part of the league we are in and it’s, therefore, important to have as many fit players as possible.

“Hopefully, we’ll have better luck from now on.”
