A MAN has appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court accused of threatening to plant bombs throughout the city and kill members of the public.

Patrick McCabe, 65, of Fairbairn Street, appeared in private before Sheriff John Rafferty on petition.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, at Fairbairn Street, he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause people fear or alarm.

He has been accused of making repeated threats to kill members of the public and making threats to manufacture and plant bombs throughout Dundee.

McCabe made no plea and the case was continued for further examination.

Solicitor Elisabeth McLellan, from Boyle’s Solicitors i n Dundee, moved for bail.

However, Sheriff Rafferty rejected the motion and McCabe was remanded in custody.

The alleged threats resulted in a major incident being declared in the street, which is close to Tannadice Stadium and Dens Park.

Residents were evacuated from their homes on Wednesday while police carried out an investigation.

The street was put on lockdown when police arrived at the scene around 10.30pm.

Military personnel from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), based in Edinburgh, attended the scene.

Yesterday, at around 6.45am, a controlled explosion was carried out.

Before the police revealed what had occurred, there had been a number of reports of a loud “bang” in the area around that time.

Residents had voiced their frustration at being “left in the dark” about the operation, with police eventually releasing a statement at 10.30am yesterday — around 12 hours after the first emergency services arrived on the scene. Children travelling to Dens Road Primary school were also forced to make a detour while the street remained closed.

Superintendent Graeme Murdoch, head of operations at Tayside Division, said public safety was its “highest priority”.

He added: “We understand that it is always concerning for the community when there is this l evel of police activity and we require the advice and services of our EOD colleagues. However, public safety remains our highest priority and, in this case, that has been no different.

“We have tried to balance this with the i mpact on local residents.

“We would like to thank all of the people affected by this incident for their full co-operation and patience, which has assisted us greatly in ensuring a safe outcome for all.”
