Woman slashed friend with glass
Elizabeth Holt, 50, a prisoner in Edinburgh, will also be supervised for a further year after she admitted assaulting Wendy Stewart in what was described as a “despicable” act.
The attack took place in Ancrum Court in the Lochee area of Dundee area on July 31.
Holt seized Ms Stewart by the body, pulled her by the hair and then repeatedly struck her on the head and body with a piece of broken glass to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
The city’s sheriff court heard the pair had been drinking together and that an argument had broken out.
The accused then assaulted Ms Stewart, grabbing her by the hair.
The court heard Holt grabbed a glass and smashed it on a table. She then struck Ms Stewart on the face with a large shard of glass, which resulted in a six-inch cut to her left cheek. During the struggle, Holt continued to wield the shard and struck Ms Stewart on the arm before others dragged her away.
Holt’s sentence had been deferred by Sheriff Alastair Brown for a social work report to be carried out.
Solicitor advocate Jim Laverty said: “The report recommends a community payback order with supervision would be both preventative and rehabilitative.
“Holt feels the victim should be compensated. There is an alternative to custody — it is a substantial package of measures, supervision, unpaid work, restriction of liberty and compensation.
“My respectful submission would be that the longer-term protection of the public would be achieved through this package of measures.”
Mr Laverty also pointed out to the sheriff that Holt had been in custody on this matter since August 2.
Sheriff Brown told Holt her record showed that on three previous occasions she had convictions for assault, including one of attempted murder.
The sheriff told her the latest offence was “despicable” and too serious not to warrant a custodial sentence.
He jailed her for two years and placed her on a supervised release order for 12 months.
