Panthers keeper Price pounces to deny DUSC
BROUGHTY United Panthers and Dundee United SC U/15s both braved the sub-zero temperatures to serve up a classic in their Tommy Clark Trophy quarterfinal clash.
Broughty keeper Wilson Price was the hero, saving an injurytime penalty from Lewis Thomson to send his side to the semi-finals as they won 3-2.
Panthers manager Alan Denny was full of praise for his No. 1.
“Wilson’s been excellent for us. On Sunday he was unbelievable, Man-of-the-Match by a mile. It was a great performance,” he said.
Broughty came racing out of the traps and went ahead after seven minutes when Lewis Denny released Ryan Carr to net. The forward made no mistake with a cool finish past Josh Hamilton.
Their lead was doubled two minutes later, with Carr cutting the ball back for Daniel Boyle, who fired home from close range.
DUSC were growing into the match and were handed a lifeline when Lewis Thomson curled a free-kick into the top corner from 20 yards.
Adam Johnston forced Price into two saves in quick succession before the big striker hit the post with a low strike. Broughty added a third against the run of play when Boyle latched onto a clever header from Carr and drilled a low shot past Hamilton from the edge of the box.
Carr nearly doubled his tally when he broke from a DUSC corner but his low shot came back off the post and into the grateful arms of Hamilton.
The second half was played in a similar vein to the first, with DUSC doing most of the attacking, while Broughty were content to hit on the break.
Price did well to push over a dipping strike from Lewis Davidson but was eventually beaten when Reece Rankin bent a shot in from 15 yards.
With the game in injury time, the referee awarded DUSC a penalty when Johnston went down in the box, but Price kept out Thomson’s effort as Broughty Panthers advanced to the semi-finals.
After a nail-biting finish, Denny hopes his players can improve on their previous cup runs. He said: “We’ve been in semi-finals the last two seasons now and we’ve never made a final, so here’s hoping we can make a final this year.”
