£4.5m bid for 30 new affordable properties

- CIARAN SHANKS

Caledonia Housing Association is seeking permission to build 30 new properties on land south of Coldside Road and west of Strathmartine Road.

A mix of affordable homes and flats is set to be built on the largely-derelict site.

The housing firm said it was hoping to meet local demand, having identified a particular need for affordable houses in the city.

In total, 18 houses will be built with 12 flats in separate blocks, four of which will be suitable for wheelchair users.

A planning application for the project, submitted by KDM Architects, is now being considered by Dundee City Council.

If the plans are given the go-ahead, work is likely to begin next summer.

PLANS have been lodged for a new £4.5 million housing development on a city industrial site.

ment director of Caledonia Housing Association, said: “It’s going to be a mix of flats and houses, all affordable housing since that’s what we focus on.

“They’ll mostly be for rent, although some might be for sale but it’s still very early days on that.

“There are 18 houses in our proposal and a couple of blocks which will include 12 flats.

“Four of these will be specially adapted for wheelchair users.

“There is particular demand, not only in that area near the Hilltown but right across Dundee.

“There are a lot of flats being built but from what we’ve seen there is a real demand for new homes.”

Mr Kilpatrick added: “For the most part it’s derelict land we’re building on.

“It’s an empty site but it’s not owned by Caledonia Housing Association yet and we’ll continue to look at that while we go through the planning process.

“Overall it’s going to cost £4.5 million, pending planning permission.

“If we manage to get permission fairly quickly, I’m hoping we can get started on the site by late summer.”

Mr Kilpatrick said the company was also looking at several other sites in Dundee for potential housing developments in the near future.

He added: “We’re actively looking at a number of potential of developments in Dundee and most of them are similar brownfield sites like the one we are looking at here.” Our
