Presentations to provide ‘voyage of discovery’

-

PREVENTING cancer by eating broccoli, treating common skin conditions with sunlight and how to keep secrets in a digital age are just some of the topics up for discussion at the University of Dundee’s Discovery Days 2018.

The events take place at the Dalhousie Building at Old Hawkhill on January 11 and 12 and will see 15 newly-appointed professors talk for 15 minutes about their area of research, along with award-winning teachers and students who will share their own ideas.

The short presentations will provide glimpses of the cutting-edge work the university is engaged in that is helping to transform lives around the world.

The achievements of staff and students will also be recognised with the presentation of the Stephen Fry Awards for Public Engagement Project of the Year and Engaged Researcher of the Year.

Professor Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor, said: “Discovery Days provide a fascinating whirlwind tour through the outstanding achievements and future plans of our staff.

“Since Discovery Days began in 2004, they have brought the work of more than 200 new professors at the university to the attention of different audiences, including members of the public, school pupils, students, academics and support staff from across the university.

“This year, we will be welcoming a further 15 new professors, talking on a rich variety of subjects. This will be a voyage of discovery for us all.”

Speakers at the event include comics professor Chris Murray alongside Professors Albena Dinkova-Kostova, Wendy Moncur and Sally Ibbotson, and Nikki Doig.
