OAP who died ‘fell after leaving pub’

- BY AMY HALL

A PENSIONER who died after he was found unconscious in the street may have fallen after leaving a nearby pub.

The 67-year-old was discovered lying at the junction of Mains Road and Bayne Square in Dundee’s Hilltown at around 11pm on New Year’s Day.

Several members of the public raised the alarm after finding him in the middle of the road with a “serious” injury.

Despite efforts to save him, he later died at Ninewells Hospital.

Police remained at the scene of the incident today.

One resident said that the man had apparently fallen over after leaving a local pub.

He said: “I have been told that the man was at the pub and when he came out he fell over.”

Another man, claiming to be the owner of the pub, said: “He just fell over. That was it — all that happened was he fell. He was inside the pub and went outside and that’s where it happened. “There is nothing more to it than that.” A resident added: “The police have cordoned off the area since they found him and there is still a police presence now.”

Police have said the death is unexplained and that they are seeking key witnesses who could have more information.

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland is reappealing for information regarding an incident which occurred in Mains Road late Monday evening.

“Around 11pm, a 67-year-old man was found by a member of the public lying on the road at the junction of Mains Road and Bayne Square, in the Hilltown area of Dundee.

“He had sustained a serious head injury. Sadly, he has now died.

“The death remains unexplained at this time.

“Witnesses are urgently sought to the incident, including a taxi driver who had to manoeuvre his vehicle around the man and also the driver of a saloon vehicle, possibly a red Audi.

“In particular, four males who were walking in Mains Road and who assisted the man by helping him into a nearby house are asked to come forward as soon as possible.

“If you have any information which could assist our inquiries, please call 101 or speak to any police officer.”
