‘He was a great guy’

Music night organised in memory of Davie Low, 59

A POPULAR Dundee man who battled cancer for 30 years will be remembered at a special tribute night.

Davie Low died of the disease aged 59.

The Fintry man was first diagnosed with throat cancer aged 28 and he had encountered numerous health difficulties from birth, having been born with a tumour in his stomach.

He underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which impacted on his ability to swallow. In later life he developed lung cancer and had surgery to remove part of his lung.

But his family and friends say his health troubles never stopped him enjoying life and a music night has been organised at the Fairfield Social Club on January 26. Tickets are £3 on the door.

The event has been organised by childhood friend Paul Williamson, with whom he enjoyed decades attending Northern Soul gigs.

Davie’s family has already raised more than £250 for the Maggie’s Centre following his funeral and proceeds from the event this month will go towards a bench in his memory at the centre.

Paul said: “I had known Davie since we were bairns. I was 14 when I first met him. I thought it would be a nice thing to do. I’ve done a lot of these nights for years and even though Davie was ill for quite a while he still kept coming along.

“He had throat cancer for about 20-odd years but it didn’t stop him from doing things and he was there right until the end.

“He was just a great guy. He loved his music and his house was full of records and memorabilia — music was his life. Hopefully we’ll be able to raise some money for the Maggie’s Centre.”

Davie lost his battle with cancer in November.

Shannon Shankland, Davie’s niece, said: “He battled illness after illness but he continued to have his humour and didn’t let this get him down. He was one of the strongest people I’ve known. I’m sure he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.”
