Kevin Watson, 55, of Dunholm Terrace, said he “wasn’t thinking” after behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards his former partner in his home street on October 26 last year.

He admitted attending at Stephanie Morris’s home, repeatedly banging on her door while in possession of a knife, self-harming and threatening to take his own life.

This was before he brandished a knife at Ross Whitton, an employee at Tesco in South Road, and threatened to self-harm.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Ms Morris became aware of Watson banging on her front door at around 1pm and trying to get in following a recent break-up.

Fiscal depute Trina Sinclair said police were called to attend, but Watson was not present. Watson returned at around 2.35pm and continued banging on the door.

Ms Sinclair added: “At around 2.40pm, neighbours overheard the accused shouting and saw him in possession of a knife, cutting his wrists and covered in blood.

“He went into the street and lay down on the pavement while still in possession of a knife.

“Another witness tried to take the knife from him, but received a cut while doing so.”

Watson then attended at Tesco where he turned to Mr Whitton and said he was going to kill himself. After returning to Dunholm Terrace, Watson ran towards four police officers but was sprayed in a bid to get him to drop the knife.

When cautioned and charged, Watson said: “I wasn’t thinking.”

Defence solicitor David Sinclair said Watson suffers from depression and had no desire to resume a relationship with Ms Watson.

Mr Sinclair and it was his client’s intention to return to live with his mother in London.

He added: “He was trying to help her with some difficulties.

“Since being in custody, he has taken advantage of the mental health team and says he sees things more clearly.

“He wishes to put this sorry episode in Dundee behind him.”

Watson was sentenced to six months in prison by Sheriff Alastair Carmichael.

A MAN who brandished a knife in a Dundee supermarket has been jailed.
