Sol and Laura’s super showings

IT was a great day for Perth Strathtay and Dundee Hawkhill Harriers at the GAA Miler Meet at G l a s g o w ’s E m i r a t e s Stadium

Hawks Laura Muir declared herself “happy” with her day’s work after she got 2018 off t o a winning start by securing the women’s 3,000 metres Scottish indoor title.

She clocked 8:37.21 during a mixed race i n which she came fifth overall.

The race was won by Strathtay’s Sol Sweeney, Laura’s training partner.

He clocked 8:19.03 i n seeing off Irish athlete Daniel Mooney (8:22.13) with another Hawk, James Donald, (8:32.63) finishing third.

Sol said: “In training most sessions I am ahead of Laura but it is quite good because she is right behind me.That is what pushes me on.

“It i s i ncredible what Laura has done since she started training with coach Andy Young so I can only hope I move in the same direction.

“It definitely has a huge effect having somebody like that in your training group.”

There was also a silver medal for Hawk Gordon Barrie in the men’s O/45 3,000 metres. He finished in 9.20.54.

There was also a big personal best for the Hawks ever improving U/17 Ryan Donald. He was ninth in his 3,000 metres heat in 9:33.25 — 16 seconds quicker than his previous best.
