People fed up over dog bins ‘neglect’
RESIDENTS in Fintry and Whitfield are outraged over what they have branded the “neglect” of the areas’ dog waste bins over the festive season.
Several readers have contacted the Tele with images of overflowing bins in the city’s North East ward.
Many of the bins in built-up areas, such as Longhaugh Road, Berwick Drive and Findowrie Place, are full to the point of overflowing.
Many of the bins are filled to the point that dog walkers have resorted to leaving bags on top of or beside the bins.
This was criticised by one resident as “absolutely disgusting”.
A spokesman for Dundee City Council said the overspill was the result of a “reduced” service over Christmas and New Year. However, Labour neighbourhood services spokesman and North East councillor Brian Gordon said the issue was one that occurred “all year round”.
He said: “You would think the council would have something in place for this time of year.
“It’s just not good enough to say that collections will be behind during the festive period.
“However, it’s not just Christmas this is happening — it’s happening all year round.”
The councillor added that he has contacted council environmental officers regarding overflowing bins.
One resident who wrote to the Tele said the council was “neglecting” local waste facilities.
The resident added: “Dogs simply do not stop excreting over the festive period and responsible dogs owners still pick up and try to deposit in a dog bin.
“Why does the council ignore this health issue of overflowing bins all over Fintry? It should be ashamed.
“This is one of many failings of our council. Whether it be a holiday period or not, measures must be put in place to ensure public health.”
Another local, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I think it’s disgusting that Dundee City Council can leave it like this.”
A spokesman for the council said: “We provide a reduced service during the festive period, which means that if staff are unwell or unavailable it is much more difficult to provide cover.
“However, if there is a persistent problem, residents can contact the council to report dog waste bins that need emptied.”
