Dog unit called as windows smashed
POLICE officers swooped on a Dundee street after reports men wearing balaclavas had smashed windows at a property.
A number of police vehicles, including dog units, attended at South Road, near the junction with Craigowan Road, yesterday morning.
Residents described seeing as many as eight police vehicles in the area just after 10am.
Marjorie Milne, 69, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, said: “I saw at least eight police vehicles. They were all parked up along South Road just after 11am.
“Within half-an-hour, some of the vehicles started driving around the area. I got the impression they were searching for someone.
“It’s the largest police presence I’ve seen here in a while.”
Fellow South Road resident Brian Wood, 57, said he heard glass smashing before police arrived in the area.
He said: “There looked to be as many as 10 officers out on the street.
“They were in South Road and Craigowan Road.
“I saw officers in some of the back gardens with police dogs as well.
“There were a number of officers standing at an entrance to one of the blocks in South Road.”
Another resident, who did not want to be named, said he saw an officer putting 3ft-long sticks into a police vehicle.
He added: “There was a dog unit which left just before 2pm. Before that, there were loads of officers in the area — at least seven police cars and a van.
“I saw a female officer carrying a couple of 3ft-long sticks. I’ve been told a property i n Craigowan Road was targeted.”
One Craigowan Road resident said men wearing balaclavas had been spotted in the street before a ground-floor flat was targeted.
Michelle McCreery, 47, said an officer came to her door to ask if she had heard windows being smashed.
She said: “I saw two police vehicles in Craigowan Road.
“An officer came to our door and asked if we had heard anything in relation to windows being smashed but we hadn’t heard anything.”
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A man was traced and detained at a nearby property after being tracked there by a police dog unit.”
