Comets trounce visitors
DUNDEE Comets ice hockey team brushed aside visitors North Ayr Wild 17-1 to keep alive their Scottish National League title-winning ambitions.
The Taysiders are sitting in second place three points behind leaders Kirkcaldy Kestrels, who they host at the start of next month.
MOTM against Wild was Daniel Topping.
Elsewhere, Dundee Tigers narrowly lost 6-4 to Edinburgh Capitals.
In a tight match at Murrayfield, an end-toend first period saw the teams head to the dressing-rooms tied at 3-3.
The hosts pulled ahead by two goals in the second session before a 1-1 third stanza ensured a Capitals victory.
Tigers scorers were Robbie Barnett, Ryan Amos, Grant Reekie and Scott Marr.
Tigers’ Ian Carstairs said after the game: “We played a solid first period and fully deserved to be level. We could arguably have been ahead at the intermission.
“However, we stopped doing the simple things we were doing right in the second period and lost a couple of avoidable goals.
“We picked things back up again in the third period but it was too little, too late and we couldn’t peg back the lead.
“There were a lot a positives from the performance in all positions and there was a big improvement over our showings at the end of 2017.
“We play Comets on Saturday (7.30pm) so, hopefully, we can continue to improve and make the last Dundee derby of the season one to remember.”
