Determined Stars have success firmly in sight
DUNDEE Stars U/14 ice hockey team demolished their opposition 45-1 and 14-0 in two league pairings over the weekend and displayed the fine form that won them both Scottish Cup and the league last season.
On Saturday their hosts were Highland Lynx, an amalgamation of Aberdeen and Inverness who are playing out their first season as a combined unit.
Despite holding back and playing this game as very much a demonstration one, with some fantastic passing work and communication between the young Dundee side, the Stars came away with an astonishing cache of 45 goals.
A lucky strike from Lynx’s Charlie Lawson in the opening minute of the second period was to be their sole marker in this extremely-tough game for the northern side.
Man of the Match for Dundee was former Aberdeen player Dawson Osborn.
Next up for the Stars was a game against Edinburgh on Sunday at Dundee Ice Arena.
Rio Page netted the opener against the Murrayfield side, assisted by Alex Gorrie and Lachlan McMillan.
Further shots from D-Man Jamie Edmonds, Ben Brown and Page brought the scoreline to 4-0 at the end of the first period.
Luca De Simone, McMillan, Page, Edmonds and Brown further extended the lead through the middle stanza to give the home outfit an impressive 9-0 advantage.
The final period saw a further five goals come from the Stars.
A hat-trick for defenceman McMillan earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.
“Although the scores speak for themselves here and it’s great to get a convincing win, we look forward to seeing the boys i n some more competitive games soon,” said an U/14 spokesman.
“These games are great practice for when we come up against tougher competition later in the season. It’s another step closer to success.
“We were the champions last year and are determined we will be again this season.”
Dundee Stars U/16 lost 4-2 to table-toppers Edinburgh at Dundee Ice Arena.
The opening period was dominated by the visitors, who were 3-0 up at the first interval.
However, after the break Stars came out of the blocks with a purpose.
Despite a number of chances to narrow the lead, a goal from Owen Kinmond saw the hosts trail 3-1 by the end of the second period.
The final stanza saw the visitors increase their lead.
However, with 10 minutes to go, Alex Gorrie scored to give Stars hope of turning the game.
Stars had their chances in the closing stages but the side from the capital managed to see out the game.
Stars’ MOTM was defenceman Jamie Edmonds.
