ROUND-UP Pitch switch pays off

Stein’s superb strike helps Fodder beat battling Rattray

-

THE weekend saw a handful of Dundee Saturday Morning Football League (DSMFL) teams return to action to participate in the Direct Soccer sponsored North of Tay Cup third-round fixtures.

With seven games going ahead, there were three wins for DSMFL teams.

Cannon Fodder’s switch of pitches from their scheduled waterlogged park at Fairmuir to Claypotts paid dividends when they saw off the challenge of Perthshire side Rattray, who had a team full of young players.

Fodder led 1-0 at the break when Craig Stewart nodded home Del Whyte’s inswinging free-kick.

They should have extended their advantage. Two efforts hit the woodwork, there was fine goalkeeping from the Rattray stopper and a missed penalty from Harry Craic.

Stewart grabbed his second from close range early in the second half before Rattray notched one back with 15 minutes to go.

An immediate response followed soon after the restart.

Fodder stalwart Iain Stein rolled back the years and thumped home from 30 yards into the top corner.

Fodder play Broughty United in the last 16 after they beat FC Boukir 6-3 despite having trailed by three goals.

A Boukir meltdown saw them dumped out of the cup having started brightly in tough conditions.
