Cops in double drugs swoop on city flats

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

POLICE descended on to two blocks of flats in Coldside during drug warrant operations carried out in the city.

Plain clothed and uniformed police officers swooped on to Dens Road yesterday morning.

Operations in the area are understood to have focused on two locations close to the junction at North Isla Street.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed drug search warrants were being executed in the city.

Officers spent several hours at the scene before emerging wearing blue gloves.

Residents said that drugs and drug dealing were a common problem in the area.

Daniel Carroll, 23, who has lived in the area for a year, said: “I saw the three police vehicles stationed outside on the street — I never saw any officers though.

“We’ve had problems with drug related issues on the street before.

“Whether that’s people pressing buzzers at all times of the night looking for people or people coming to addresses and only spending minutes in the close.

“In the last six months I would say the area has gotten worse. I’m pleased to see the police were here carrying out these raids.”

One resident, who declined to be named, said: “I woke up with the noise in the block — I wasn’t sure about the time of the incident, it was maybe just after 9am.

“I saw two officers wearing riot gear and carrying shields and one officer with a sniffer dog.

“Within the last year or so I would say this is the third of fourth time this has happened.”

One older resident who has lived in the area for 57 years said he “wasn’t surprised” by yesterday’s incident.

He said: “I noticed one of the police vehicles had been sitting there for quite a bit.

“I never saw any officers — there was no sirens going when they arrived either. I wasn’t sure what the incident was in connection with.

“We’ve had police at the addresses in the surrounding blocks before so I wasn’t surprised to see the police here.

“There are so many comings and goings, you don’t know most of the people who live here now.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland executed a drugs search warrant at an address in Dens Road. Inquiries are continuing.” A police vehicle at Dens Road.
